After School Conversations

I love listening to my kids tell me stories right after school. With my boys, if I don’t ask them questions soon about their day then I will get the one word responses like good, fun, long. So I try to quiz them while it’s fresh on their mind. Some of my kids like to talk more than others. Dawson is not lacking when it comes to words. Today was no different. He began to tell me about a girl in his class and how she was in 1st grade for the second time. He said, “I think she is in 1st grade again because Mrs. Harcrow loved her so much she didn’t want her to leave.” To which I responded, “Do you think you will be in 1st grade for 2 years because Mrs. Harcrow loves you so much?”. He wasn’t so sure about that because he wants Mrs. Harcrow to love him but he doesn’t want an extra year of school!

I was reminded how important it is that we believe the best about others. Dawson had no idea what her story was but he certainly believed the best. It’s not easy to believe the best about others. People have given us many reasons not to. But I want others to believe the best about me so why don’t I do that for others. When someone responds harshly, they could have had the worst day of their life. When someone hurts me, they could be hurt at home everyday by the people who should love them the most. When someone cuts me off on the highway, they could be rushing to the hospital to see a loved one in critical condition. When someone cuts me off on the highway, they could be rushing to the hospital to see a loved one in critical condition. I needed to type that one twice to remind myself again and I should probably keep repeating! When I don’t know the whole story, I need to fill in the blanks with positive things or not at all until I know the truth. I’m thankful for my 7 year old who reminded me of that today.
