The week before Auditions

This is a difficult week for me and it has been ever since I started teaching flute lessons in high school a few years ago…maybe more than a few. It’s the week before auditions. I’ve been telling my students about this day from the moment we received the audition music. Many of them received it before the last school year ended in May. I told them that if they begin to work on the music now and through the summer then you will have a head start. It will be challenging to fit it in during the school year when you have homework and other band music to practice as well. All of them listened. No one disagreed. But only a few actually began to prepare early. The school year started and I told them how many months we had to prepare. In September, I warned them that once October hits it will fly by because we have nearly a week long break so practice well now. And here we are, the week before auditions. It’s so hard for me to end lessons with my students the week before auditions. Some have prepared well and are ready but some have not. Some wish we could turn back time so that they could better prepare. But now all they can do is learn from this and hopefully not make the same mistake next year. There’s nothing more I can do now except pray for them and I will certainly be doing that on Saturday.

As I end each lesson hoping

the best for my students, I’m reminded how much God wants that for us. He can do so much more for us than I can do for my students. I long to put the ability to play well inside of them but I can’t. All I can do is tell and show them how. When we trust in Jesus and commit to live our lives for Him, He can work in us and through us to accomplish His great purpose for our lives. As long as you have life, it’s not too late to begin. We don’t know when our life will end so why not start now?
